Here’s the good news: Elizabeth Banks will play one of the first female war photographers in a new adventure-drama. The project will boast a woman director, Sloane U’Ren, and focus on the protagonist’s developing friendship with a marooned Japanese soldier after her plane is shot down over the South Pacific. Shooting will begin in the spring, i.e., quite soon.
Here’s the bad news: The film is titled “Rita Hayworth with a Hand Grenade.” In addition to being clunky, it lazily sexualizes Banks’ character while (also lazily) glamorizing violence. It’s possible Anotny Neely’s script will make the title more logical/palatable, but for the time being, it’s wince-worthy. Can’t win ’em all, I guess.
U’Ren previously directed the feature “Dimensions.” Banks will be seen next in the final “Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2” (out November 14) and is currently attached to directing a “Charlie’s Angels” reboot for Sony.
