Long before Ellen DeGeneres brought smiles to people’s faces every weekday as the host of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” she was lighting up stages as a stand-up comic. The Emmy winner is set to return to her roots, and Netflix will be there to film it. Deadline reports that DeGeneres is teaming up with the streaming giant for her first stand-up special in 15 years.
The “Finding Dory” star’s last stand-up special was 2003’s “Ellen DeGeneres: Here and Now,” which was preceded by 2001’s “Ellen DeGeneres: The Beginning.” Both aired on HBO and received multiple Emmy nods. She won an Emmy in 1997 for co-writing “The Puppy Episode,” the episode of her sitcom “Ellen” where she came out as a lesbian. The landmark ep recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.
“It has been 15 years since I did a stand-up special. Fifteen years. And I’m writing it now, I can’t wait,” DeGeneres shared on “Ellen.” “I’ll keep you posted when and where I’m gonna shoot my Netflix special. I’m excited to do it; I’m excited for you to see it.”
Sarah Silverman also has a Netflix stand-up special on the way. “Sarah Silverman: A Speck of Dust” will premiere May 30.
“The Ellen DeGeneres Show” recently wrapped its 14th season. Check out a clip of DeGeneres announcing her new stand-up special below.
