Friday in August usually mean boring, but not today. After a big week when the Academy elected its first female African American leader, more news was made this morning with the announcement that talk show host and all around funny gal, Ellen DeGeneres will be hosting the Oscars on March 2nd.
This will be her second time hosting the awards show. She previously hosted the show in 2007.
The quotes in the press release are fawning, but there is no doubt that hiring Ellen sends a message. It sends a message that the boyish, sexist humor from last year is gone and that the Academy, in the words of its new leader Cheryl Boone Isaacs is “looking forward to an entertaining, engaging and fun show.”
We are also looking forward to watching a show that doesn’t make us cringe and doesn’t make us, as women, feel like we don’t belong.
This announcement goes a long way in making us believe that come March 2 this will be a wonderful, fun and funny show.
A good way to end the week.
