Ellen DeGeneres is following in the footsteps of another iconic comedian. She’s been named as the second recipient of the Carol Burnett Award and will accept the honor at the 2020 Golden Globes. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news. Named in recognition of the first woman to host a variety sketch show, “The Carol Burnett Show,” the trophy’s inaugural recipient was Burnett herself.
The Carol Burnett Award is presented to “an honoree who has made outstanding contributions to the television medium on or off the screen,” making it the “television equivalent of the Golden Globes’ film-centric Cecil B. DeMille Award,” THR explains. The winner is chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s board of directors.
A Primetime and Daytime Emmy winner, DeGeneres is best known for her influential ’90s ABC sitcom “Ellen,” hosting “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” and her stand-up. Off-screen, the “Finding Dory” star has authored a number of books and started a production company, a Very Good Production. She’s been celebrated for her LGBTQ and animal rights activism. Now in her 17th season hosting “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” the multi-hyphenate dropped her latest stand-up special, “Relatable,” on Netflix last year.
“From her sitcoms, to stand-up, to becoming a household staple on daytime television, she is a pioneer who has captivated audiences for nearly 25 years with her undeniable charm and wit,” HFPA president Lorenzo Soria said. “In addition to her television success, she’s an advocate and philanthropist, lending her voice to those who don’t have one, and spreading kindness and joy through the power of her platform.”
The Golden Globes will take place January 5.
