The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) is paying tribute to Ellen Kuras. The Hollywood Reporter confirms the cinematographer and director will be presented with ASC’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the org’s 36th annual awards on March 20 — and will be the first woman to ever receive the honor.
“Ellen is undeniably a trailblazer,” said ASC president Stephen Lighthill. “She has consistently brought a daring and compelling creative talent to her work as a director and cinematographer. She is known to be a passionate collaborator, strong leader, and generous soul.”
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Pretend It’s a City,” and “David Byrne’s American Utopia” are among Kuras’ many notable cinematography credits. She won the Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program Emmy for her work on “Jane” and picked up Sundance Cinematography Awards for “Swoon,” “Angela,” and “Personal Velocity: Three Portraits.”
As a director, Kuras received an Oscar nod for her doc “The Betrayal – Nerakhoon.” Her other directing credits include “The Umbrella Academy,” “Ozark,” and “Legion.” Next, she’s set to direct “Eternal Sunshine” star Kate Winslet in the Lee Miller biopic “Lee.”
