Debt is as much a mainstay of modern American life as potable drinking water or people acting like buffoons on reality TV.
Ellen Pompeo is looking to dramatize our indebted condition with a new series for ABC Family she’s executive-producing, an adaptation of Rachel Carey’s novel named, simply, Debt.
The NYC-set satire of the 2008 financial meltdown will follow Lillian, a twentysomething SAT tutor who discovers that everyone around her owes something to someone, including the billionnaire parents she works for.
THR notes that Debt is part of the cable network’s gambit of attracting older women (meaning women in their 20s) and young adults rather than focusing on families with kids.
