Emerging Pictures will release “A Light Beneath Their Feet,” a coming-of-age drama helmed by Valerie Weiss (“Losing Control”) and written by Moira McMahon (“Private Practice”).
The film will give “Orange is the New Black” fans a chance to see Pennsatucky in a whole new light. Taryn Manning plays a mother struggling with bipolar disorder in the feature. Her daughter has a promising future to look forward to — but she might stay near home to care for her mom as opposed to following her dreams. Madison Davenport (“From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series”), Nora Dunn (“Entourage”), Kali Hawk (“Black Jesus”) and Maddie Hasson (“Twisted”) co-star.
A number of mental health organizations are supporting and promoting the film, including Glenn Close’s Bring Change 2 Mind. Weiss has a Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology.
“’A Light Beneath Their Feet’ is one of those rare opportunities to work on a project that is both entertaining and has an important message,” said Emerging Pictures’ Exec VP Ryan Nadel.
“A Light Beneath Their Feet” struck a chord with viewers at the Mill Valley Film Festival, where it won the audience award. You can catch the film in theaters May 6. Weiss will begin shooting “The Archer,”a feminist coming-of-age action film, next month.
Season 4 of “Orange is the New Black” debuts on Netflix June 17.
