Emma Roberts and “Holidate” screenwriter Tiffany Paulsen have another holiday-themed rom-com on the way. They’ll follow up their hit Netflix pic with “About Fate.” Deadline broke the news.
Described as a “tale of two people who believe in love, but seem to never be able to find its true meaning,” “About Fate” sees a woman and man cross paths “on a stormy New Years Eve and comedy and chaos ensue.”
Roberts’ love interest is currently being cast. Filming is set to kick off in June.
“Nancy Drew” marked Roberts and Paulsen’s first collaboration. Roberts starred in the 2007 detective story and Paulsen co-wrote its script. They reunited with last year’s “Holidate,” a story about two strangers who make a pact to be each other’s platonic plus-ones at holiday events.
Asked about the “explosion” of holiday and other holiday movies on Netflix and streaming channels, Paulsen told ScreenCraft, “I think holiday movies have always been an audience go-to for warm fuzzy comfort viewing, which is why we tend to watch the same ones over and over again.” She added, “With the popularity of streamers and people now having the luxury to watch movies at home (and well, no choice now with [COVID-19]) it’s that same cozy comfort food. Holiday movies are the macaroni and cheese of film. Everyone loves them and they never get old – so we want more more more!”
An alumna of “American Horror Story” and “Scream Queens,” Roberts’ film credits include “Scream 4” and “We’re the Millers.”
Paulsen penned the 2016 remake of “Adventures in Babysitting” led by Sabrina Carpenter and Sofia Carson.
