Emma Roberts to Star in Netflix Figure Skating Drama

Roberts in "Scream Queens"

Emma Roberts is following in Margot Robbie’s footsteps and taking to the ice. The “American Horror Story” star is signed on to topline a project set in the world of competitive figure skating, Deadline reports. Robbie scored an Oscar nod earlier this year for playing disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.”

Titled “Spinning Out,” Roberts’ series is described as “edgy” and sees her playing Kat, “an up-and-coming, high-level single skater who’s about to turn in her skates after a disastrous fall took her off the competition track. When Kat seizes an opportunity to continue her career as a pair skater with a talented bad-boy partner, she risks exposing a fiercely kept secret that could unravel her entire life. On and off the ice, Kat and her new partner will face daunting odds, injury to body and soul, financial sacrifice, and even potential mental breakdown on their way to realizing their Olympic dream,” the source summarizes.

Netflix has given a 10-episode series order to the project, which was created by former competitive figure skater Samantha Stratton, whose credits include “Search Party” and “The Arrangement.” She’ll exec produce “Spinning Out” and serve as a co-showrunner alongside Lara Olsen (“Reign”).

Roberts’ recent credits include “Nerve” and “Who We Are Now.” She appears in the eighth season of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology “American Horror Story,” entitled “Apocalypse.” It airs on FX Wednesday nights.

“When I started working with Ryan Murphy, it changed my life,” Roberts has said. “I remember I would get the scripts, and I would be so blown away by the way he would write these female characters. They were so unapologetic, and he just gave me, as an actress, so much responsibility, and I was always very flattered by that. For ‘Scream Queens,’ there would just be, like, five paragraphs straight of talking. It was intense, but it was so much fun to get to play such a likable villain.”

Among Roberts upcoming projects is “Paradise Hills,” a sci-fi thriller that marks Alice Waddington’s feature directorial debut.
