Emma Stone Signs On for “Cruella” Sequel

"Cruella": Laurie Sparham

We haven’t seen the last of Emma Stone’s Cruella de Vil. According to Deadline, the Oscar winner has signed on to topline the sequel to this year’s “Cruella,” the origin story of the “101 Dalmatians” villainess. The live-action pic launched in theaters and via Disney+ Premier Access this spring and has grossed nearly $222 million at the international box office.

Announced in the wake of Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit against Disney, which concerns the money Johansson allegedly lost when “Black Widow” was released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+, the “Cruella 2” deal “mutually benefits both sides [Stone and Disney] especially at a time when Disney is still assessing the dynamic window model on its event titles.” No word on whether “Cruella 2″ will also receive an in-theaters-and-at-home release.

“While the media landscape has been disrupted in a meaningful way for all distributors, their creative partners cannot be left on the sidelines to carry a disproportionate amount of the downside without the potential for upside. This agreement demonstrates that there can be an equitable path forward that protects artists and aligns studios’ interests with talent,” said Patrick Whitesell, executive chairman of Endeavor, the agency representing Stone. “We are proud to work alongside Emma and Disney, and appreciate the studio’s willingness to recognize her contributions as a creative partner. We are hopeful that this will open the door for more members of the creative community to participate in the success of new platforms.”

Stone also served as an exec producer on “Cruella.” She won the Best Actress Oscar for “La La Land” and landed Supporting Actress nods for “The Favourite” and “Birdman.” “Battle of the Sexes,” “Maniac,” and “Easy A” are among her other credits.
