Emma Straub Developing Her Novel “All Adults Here” for TV, Will Write and EP with Sarah Heyward

Straub: Jennifer Bastian

Emma Straub’s latest novel, “All Adults Here,” was released only a few days ago, but it’s already being developed for the screen. The author is set to pen and exec produce a television adaptation for MWM Studios alongside “Girls” writer-producer Sarah Heyward. Deadline broke the news.

Published on May 4 by Riverhead Books, “All Adults Here” centers on Astrid Strick, who begins to reexamine her parenting decisions when she witnesses a bus accident. “Astrid’s youngest son is drifting and unfocused, making parenting mistakes of his own. Her daughter is pregnant yet struggling to give up her own adolescence. And her eldest seems to measure his adult life according to standards no one else shares,” the book’s synopsis teases. “But who gets to decide, so many years later, which long-ago lapses were the ones that mattered? Who decides which apologies really count? It might be that only Astrid’s thirteen-year-old granddaughter and her new friend really understand the courage it takes to tell the truth to the people you love the most.”

The book is described as “a deeply satisfying story about adult siblings, aging parents, high school boyfriends, middle school mean girls, the lifelong effects of birth order, and all the other things that follow us into adulthood, whether we like them to or not.”

“We are thrilled to adapt ‘All Adults Here” into a television series with MWM Studios – a company with a history of empowering artists to create distinctive and award-winning content,” Straub and Heyward told Deadline. “It’s been incredibly exciting to explore the book anew and to expand the way we see these characters and their world. We cannot wait to bring this story to the screen.”

“Straub is one of the most exciting young voices in literature,” Gigi Pritzker, MWM’s CEO and co-founder, commented. “Her wit, storytelling, and unique perspective draw you in, and we look forward to working closely with her and Sarah to bring this project to the screen.”

Straub’s other novels include “Modern Lovers,” “The Vacationers,” “Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures,” and “Other People We Married.” She opened indie bookstore Books Are Magic in Brooklyn in 2017.

Heyward won a WGA Award for writing “Girls.” “SKAM Austin” and “Modern Love” are among her other writing-producing credits, and she has directed episodes of web series “Two Woke Gurls” and “LA’d.” She’s currently developing film and TV projects for Netflix, Amazon, and FX.
