Emma Thompson in Talks for Starring Role in “The Children Act”

Emma Thompson in “Bridget Jones’s Baby”

Oscar winner Emma Thompson is reportedly in talks to star in an adaptation of “The Children Act,” Deadline writes.

The book, written by Ian McEwan, follows “a British High Court judge who must make judgments on a plethora of seemingly hopeless and unpleasant cases. Judge Fiona Maye is so involved with her cases that she hears that it often strains her marriage. But one case is of particular difficultly — that of a 17-year-old boy who is suffering from leukemia and does not want to be forced to have possible life-saving blood transfusions because it goes against his religion. The case causes internal turmoil for the wise and compassionate judge who must choose between the bright boy’s right to choose and the possibility of a future.”

The project is set to be directed by Richard Eyre, whose previous films “Iris” and “Notes on a Scandal” resulted in Oscar-nominated performances for their female stars.

Thompson can next be seen in “Bridget Jones's Baby,” which she co-wrote, and in a voice role in the upcoming “Beauty and the Beast” live-action remake starring Emma Watson.
