Emma Watson Takes it to the Next Level

Since graduating from the Harry Potter franchise and Brown University, Emma Watson has been carefully planning her transition from child to adult star.

So far that’s meant playing teen characters in well-received indies like The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Bling Ring. That seems to be the smart route, since going younger in The Hunger Games movies, Divergent, and The Fault in Our Stars has worked out pretty well for Watson’s early-twenties peers Jennifer Lawrence and Shailene Woodley.

Following in their footsteps, Watson will also star in (and produce) the adaptation of a dystopian YA (potential) series. Watson is attached to Erika Johansen’s The Queen of the Tearling (the first book is out in the US today), a fantasy adventure that takes place 300 years in the future when civilization has collapsed and technological progress has reverted to that of the Medieval Ages. Watson will play a character like Games of Thrones fan favorite Daenerys Targaryen — a headstrong, idealistic nineteen-year-old girl who will attempt to take back her family’s kingdom and institute a fairer system of government once her reign is secure.

Watson has also added to her grown-up responsibilities a new role as an UN Goodwill Ambassador. She will work for the UN’s gender-equality branch, specifically the HeForShe campaign.

In a statement, Watson commented, “Women’s rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life that I can’t imagine an opportunity more exciting.”
