Emmy Nominations: “I May Destroy You,” “Hacks,” “Pen15,” and More

"I May Destroy You": HBO

“I May Destroy You’s” egregious snub at this year’s Golden Globe Awards remains as infuriating as ever, but Michaela Coel’s acclaimed drama is getting major love from the Emmy Awards. The HBO limited series garnered eight nominations, including acting, directing, and writing nods for Coel. Created by Coel, “I May Destroy You” tells the story of a writer reckoning with the aftermath of being sexually assaulted.

“Hacks,” another Women and Hollywood favorite, racked in slew of noms including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series (Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky, and Paul W. Downs), and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series (Aniello). Stars Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are both up for acting honors, the former in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category and the latter in Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The HBO dark comedy tells the story of a stand-up legend (Smart) and the entitled 20-something (Einbinder) she hires to punch up her jokes.

Smart is also in the running for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role as Helen, Mare’s mother, in “Mare of Easttown.” As expected, Winslet landed a nod for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her starring role in the HBO murder mystery. She and Coel are joined in the category by Cynthia Erivo (“Genius: Aretha”), Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”), and Elizabeth Olsen (“WandaVision”).

Mj Rodriguez is making history as the first trans woman up for an award in a major acting category at the Emmys. She’s nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category for “Pose.” Other nominees in the category include Uzo Aduba (“In Treatment”) and Olivia Colman (“The Crown”).

We’re pleasantly surprised to see “Pen15” receive some much-deserved recognition from the Emmys. The coming-of-age comedy is up for three honors: Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series (Maya Erskine), and Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series (Melissa DeLizi). Erskine and Anna Konkle co-created “Pen15” and star as adolescent versions of themselves.

Also encouraging is the fact that half of the helmers up for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series are women: Julie Anne Robinson (“Bridgerton”), Jessica Hobbs (“The Crown”), and Liz Garbus (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) scored nods.

Other women directors up for honors include — but are fortunately not limited to –Kirsten Johnson (“Dick Johnson Is Dead,” Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program) and Susanna Fogel (“The Flight Attendant,” Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series).
