English-Language Remake of Lesbian Romantic Drama “Two of Us” in the Works

“Two of Us,” a French drama about a retirement-age lesbian couple, may be getting an English-language update. According to Screen Daily, Sarah Sulick of London’s Bright Pictures and Eve Gabereau, CEO of the U.K.’s Modern Films, optioned remake rights to the film.

The original pic’s producers, Pierre-Emmanuel Fleurantin and Laurent Baujard, will exec produce the English-language version. No word on a director or screenwriter yet.

“Two of Us” follows Madeleine (Martine Chevallier) and Nina (Barbara Sukowa), longtime lovers who live in adjacent apartments in Montpellier. As far as Madeleine’s adult children know, their mother and Nina are just close friends. Everything, including the couple’s plans to eventually move to Rome together, is thrown into disarray when Madeleine experiences a health crisis.

Co-written by Malysone Bovorasmy, the film premiered at TIFF 2019. It was released in France in 2020, in the U.S. earlier this year, and in the U.K. July 16. Both Chevallier and Sukowa received Best Actress nominations at this year’s César Awards for their performances. “Two of Us” was also France’s submission for Best International Film at the 2021 Oscars.

“Two of Us” marks the first film optioned by Modern Films. Gabereau previously EP’d titles including “I Am Not A Witch” and “Mad, Sad & Bad.” “Honeytrap” is among Bright Pictures’ productions.
