Wanda Sykes is teaming up with EPIX for “What Happened… Ms. Sykes?” The one-hour Original Comedy Event — whose title is a nod to a Maya Angelou quotation about Nina Simone — will feature the comedian, actress and writer performing stand-up that tackles race, politics and family dynamics.
Sykes commented, “I’m excited to be partnering with EPIX for this show. It’s been too long since my last special, but just like a new Sade album, it takes time to deliver pure genius. You can thank me later.”
Mark S. Greenberg, President and CEO of EPIX, added “Wanda delivers first-rate stand-up comedy that touches on culturally-relevant and sometimes controversial topics with her own brand of humor that has captivated audiences for nearly two decades. We look forward to celebrating that legacy as well as her funny, honest takes on parenting and family life in her first special for EPIX.”
The special will be filmed on May 21 at The Theatre at Ace Hotel in LA and debut on the premium TV network October 21.
Sykes’ TV and film credits include “Black-ish,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “The New Adventures of Old Christine” and the “Ice Age” franchise. Sykes also starred in her own sitcom for Fox in 2003, “Wanda At Large.” In 2009, she hosted “The Wanda Sykes Show,” a weekly late-night talk-show.
