Erica Lipez to Write and EP “We Were the Lucky Ones” Limited Series for Hulu, Joey King to Star

An adaptation of Georgia Hunter’s bestselling book “We Were the Lucky Ones,” about a Jewish family separated at the start of WWII, has been ordered to series at Hulu.

According to Deadline, Erica Lipez (“Julia,” “The Morning Show”) is on board as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, with Hunter also taking on EP duties. Kate Sullivan will produce, while Joey King (“The Act”) is attached to star.

Speaking of what inspired her to write the book, Hunter explained, “I’ll never forget the day, at fifteen years old, I learned that I came from a family of Holocaust survivors. It was a discovery that changed my life, inspiring a decade-long journey to unearth and record my family’s story.”

Set to direct is Thomas Kail (“Hamilton,” “Fosse/Verdon”). “When ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’ landed in my dear friend Tommy Kail’s hands, I knew it had found its home,” said Hunter. “I couldn’t be more excited to partner with him, with our incredible showrunner, Erica Lipez, and with the amazing teams at Old 320, 20th [Television], and Hulu as we bring the story of my ancestors –and through it, the story of the Holocaust –to the screen.” Kail and Jennifer Todd (“Memento,” “Across the Universe”) will also executive produce under their Old 320 Sycamore Pictures banner.

“Georgia’s love for her family bursts off the page and her vivid writing puts you right next to them at every moment: we’ll aim to honor these efforts on screen,” said Kail.

Eight episodes are planned for the limited series.

Lipez has exec produced and written for TV’s “Bates Motel,” “The Morning Show,” and “Julia,” and also has writing credits on “Suits” and “Lone Star.”

King earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for her performance in “The Act.” Her other credits include starring roles in Becca Gleason’s “Summer 03,” and Netflix hit “The Kissing Booth” and its sequels, and she’s set to lead and exec produce the upcoming adaptation of YA novel “Uglies.” She has her own first-look deal with Netflix, notable for making her one of the youngest creatives to strike a deal with a streamer.
