European Film Award Nominations: “Titane” and “Quo Vadis, Aida?” Up for Top Honor

"Quo Vadis, Aida?"

The European Film Academy has announced nominations for the 34th European Film Awards, and Julia Ducournau’s “Titane” and Jasmila Žbanić’s “Quo Vadis, Aida?” lead the pack. They are tied with “The Father” for most noms, each scoring four apiece.

Both “Titane” and “Quo Vadis, Aida?” are up for the night’s top honor, European Film. Ducournau and Zbanic are also in the running for European Director. “Titane’s” Agathe Rousselle and “Quo Vadis, Aida?’s” Jasna Đuričić scored nods in the European Actress category. Zbanic is the only woman to receive a nomination for European Screenwriter.

The winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year, “Titane” tells the story of a dancer, model, and serial killer with a sexual attraction to cars. The revenge thriller is France’s submission to the best international film category for the 2022 Academy Awards.

“Quo Vadis, Aida?” received a nomination in that category earlier this year. Set in 1995 during the Bosnian War, the drama tells the story of a translator working for the United Nations in the small town of Srebrenica in the days leading up to the Srebrenica massacre.

Other women-directed titles up for honors include Yngvild Sve Flikke’s “Ninjababy,” the story of a woman dealing with an unwanted pregnancy, and Maria Speth’s “Mr Bachmann and His Class,” a portrait of an elementary school teacher and his relationship with his students. The former received a nod for European Comedy and the latter for European Documentary.

The European Film Awards will take place December 11. Head over to Deadline to check out all of the nominees.
