Eva Longoria Bastón to Make Feature Directorial Debut with Workplace Comedy

Longoria: Fox

Best known for her role as Gabrielle Solis on “Desperate Housewives,” Eva Longoria Bastón has spent years building up an impressive resume behind the scenes. After making her TV directorial debut on a 2014 episode of “Devious Maids” — which she also served as an exec producer on — the multi-hyphenate has gone on to helm eps of series such as “”Black-ish,” “The Mick,” and “Jane the Virgin.” Now she’s signed on to direct “24-7,” her first feature. Longoria Bastón will also star in the workplace comedy alongside “Scandal’s” Kerry Washington. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.

Penned by Sarah Rothschild, the story centers on a group of women accountants “who band together against a group of male co-workers to solve a fraud case that will save their jobs. The project is said to be in the tone of ‘9 to 5,’ the classic 1980 female-centric workplace comedy starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton,” the source details.

“A Simple Favor” director Paul Feig and partner Jesse Henderson will produce via their FeigCo Entertainment banner. Longoria Bastón and Washington will also produce via their respective shingles, UnbeliEVAble Entertainment and Simpson Street.

“24-7” was first announced in 2017 with Longoria Bastón and Washington signed on to star. A director wasn’t attached at that point.

“We still have such a gender gap, whether it’s equal pay or equal opportunities,” Longoria Bastón has said. “Any time you can highlight a woman doing [something that shows her power], it’s a huge victory for us, because then other women can go, ‘OK, I’m not reinventing the wheel. Somebody else blazed this trail before me, so let me just follow that example, or follow her lead. But [it’s hard] to be what you don’t see.”

The “Telenovela” actress and exec producer recently wrapped filming the live-action “Dora the Explorer.” Washington’s upcoming projects include “Little Fires Everywhere,” a Hulu series based on Celeste Ng’s best-selling novel. Reese Witherspoon co-stars.
