“I would never want you to do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing,” an actress is told by a talented producer in our exclusive trailer for “Tape.” Based on experiences of someone close to the writer-director, Deborah Kampmeier’s latest tells the story of Pearl (Isabelle Fuhrman, “The Hunger Games”), a young woman who knows she’s talented but is struggling to manifest the career she’s dreamed of. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she meets a producer (Tarek Bishara, “The Tale”) who claims to be invested in her “on-camera and 0ff-camera development.” After inviting her to join his “protégé project,” he tells her, “I’m asking you to prove to me that the potential I feel like you hold is true.”
No doubt feeling pressure to impress her mentor, the actress assures him, “I will live it [and] breathe it. I really appreciate everything that you’re doing for me.”
Everything the producer suggests a sinister deeper meaning. His unconventional methods have already set off alarm bells — we see that he’s being followed by an actress (Annarosa Mudd, “Peel”) who is secretly recording him, seemingly trying to gather evidence of sexual misconduct.
“‘Tape’ was created to take my dear friend’s story back from her perpetrator’s gaze and turn it into a revelation of her own experience and truth,” Kampmeier told us. “The film pulls focus to gray area of sexual abuse and moves women’s experience from a place of secrecy and isolation to one of visibility and empowered connection.”
“Hounddog,” “Split,” and “Virgin” are among Kampmeier’s other credits.
Toronto’s Female Eye Film Festival is hosting retrospective of Kampmeier’s work and “Tape” will screen there. The fest kicked off yesterday and runs through Sunday, March 8.
“Tape” lands in theaters March 27. You can find more screening info on the film’s website.
