EXCLUSIVE TRAILER: ‘How I Got Over’ Chronicles the Streets-to-Stage Journey of 15 Homeless Women

The talent, intelligence, and creativity of women on the margins is showcased in “How I Got Over,” an inspirational documentary that chronicles how 15 formerly homeless women put together and perform a play based on their life experiences at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

“How I Got Over” is directed by Nicole Boxer, a producer on the Oscar-nominated documentary “The Invisible War” and the upcoming “The Hunting Ground,” an expose about the startling prevalence of rape crimes on college campuses.

In a statement to Women and Hollywood, Boxer said of “How I Got Over,” “The women of N Street Village are survivors of the 50-year “War on Poverty”, and their traumatic tales can inform our humanity about what is so beautiful — but what is equally heartbreaking — about this particular American experience. I fell in love with the characters in my film because, as much as they resisted at first, they became incredible truth-tellers, master story-tellers, and the keepers of history. I learned so much about the city I had lived in for years, but clearly only on the periphery. These women knew the city, its politics, its real secrets — and lead us to a common humanity, a common shared community. They point out for us the cruelty of the system of incarceration that keeps many locked up and unable to heal from past trauma. We all share the desire for a better life for our families, even though we make mistakes.”

She continued, “In this [filmmaking] process, I watched women come to life, from damaged souls raw from incarceration and homelessness to dignified healer-leaders. As their stories became a tool for a better understanding and respect, the women begin to transform right before our very eyes. Telling these stories, the women knew they were helping and healing the women coming up behind them.”

“How I Got Over” will be available via VOD on March 6.
