Another network is developing a series about a female basketball coach. Back in September it was revealed that “Pitch Perfect’s” Elizabeth Banks and NBA superstar LeBron James are teaming up for “Hoops,” a drama about a former WNBA star and coach who becomes the first female head coach of a men’s college basketball team. Hailing from Jennifer Cecil (“Notorious”), the project has received a script commitment with a penalty attached from NBC. Now Deadline is reporting that ABC has “Trailblazer” in development, also about a female basketball coach working for a men’s team.
Written by “Quantico” scribe Joe Webb, “Trailblazer” tells the story of Jordan Cruz, “who rises to fame when she’s recruited by UCLA to become the first female coach of a Division 1 men’s team. While she quickly wins over the school’s female President and shares an undeniable spark with the scout who discovered her, Jordan faces more enemies than friends as she disrupts the Old Boys’ clubhouse of big-time college hoops. The drama is about the strength it takes to achieve greatness, and the wisdom to realize we can’t do it alone,” the source summarizes.
Former CBS head of drama Christina Davis is among the project’s exec producers.
