Female-Led WWII Spy Thriller from Lydia Dean Pilcher and Sarah Megan Thomas in Development

Another female-led spy thriller is on the way, this one based on a true story. Set in WWII, the pic tells the story of spy recruiter Vera Atkins. The as-yet untitled project will be written by Sarah Megan Thomas (“Equity”) and directed by Lydia Dean Pilcher (“Radium Girls”), The Hollywood Reporter confirms. Both will produce.

Set to begin shooting this spring, the film is currently being cast. Atkins is “known for recruiting, training, and supervising the British secret agents who parachuted into France to sabotage the Nazis during World War II,” the source details. “She was widely believed to have inspired the James Bond character of Miss Moneypenny.” The story follows Atkins as “she selects two of the first women of the Special Operations Executive, also known as Winston Churchill’s ‘secret army’ — a pacifist of Indian descent and a daring American who is challenged, but undaunted, by a disability. These civilian women form an unlikely sisterhood while entangled in dangerous missions to turn the tide of the war.”

Charlize Theron played a spy in this year’s “Atomic Blonde.” Many female-centric spy stories are in the works, including ones starring Jennifer Lawrence, Blake Livley, and Keira Knightley.

In 2016 Atkins was featured in a Vanity Fair article titled “Five Badass Female Spies Who Deserve Their Own World War II Movie.”

“Sarah Megan Thomas has written a powerful screenplay,” Pilcher said in a statement. “In a time of surging nationalism, this character-driven, untold story explores how different national and cultural forces working together can stimulate a deeper understanding of society as a whole.”

Thomas added, “One of Lydia’s many gifts is her ability to tell entertaining stories that are relevant for the global marketplace. She is the perfect director for this spy drama featuring an international cast of women uniting to resist.”
