“Skate Kitchen” director Crystal Moselle and “Love” co-creator Lesley Arfin are teaming up to bring a female-led skateboarding comedy to the small screen. HBO is developing the potential series, according to TheWrap.
Currently untitled, the project is inspired by “Skate Kitchen,” Moselle’s award-winning drama about a lonely teen in New York City who befriends a group of girl skateboarders. The film made its world premiere at Sundance in January, and took home awards from Stockholm Film Festival and L.A. Outfest, and received two Gotham nominations.
The series will also be set in NYC. Moselle and Arfin are signed on to write and executive produce, with the former set to direct.
“As girls we were never brave enough to try skateboarding,” Moselle and Arfin said. “We’re excited to work on a project that could potentially get other girls to feel inspired enough to face their fears, fight the patriarchy, and start shredding. Women are changing the game across industries all over this country. Why not add skateboarding to that list?”
Moselle made her feature debut with “The Wolfpack,” a documentary that was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2015. The film follows six brothers confined to their home who learn about the world by watching films.
“Stay focused on making more films,” Moselle urged when we asked her advice for women filmmakers. “Make films about perspectives that are not covered as much. Don’t let anything get in the way. I never take no for an answer when it’s something I really believe in,” she explained.
Best known for co-creating Gillian Jacobs-starrer “Love,” which dropped its third and final season on Netflix in March, Arfin’s other writing credits include “Girls” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”
