“Ghostbusters” isn’t the only franchise getting a female-friendly makeover. Variety reports that Sony has begun development on a “female-driven spinoff” of the immensely popular and lucrative “21 Jump Street” franchise with “Broad City” writers Lucia Aniello and Paul Downs.
“21 Jump Street” and its sequel “22 Jump Street” have grossed a total of more than $532 million internationally, with a third installment in the works. Sony is clearly responding not only to the popularity of this franchise, but also the demand for more women-centric content — and kudos to them for it.
While we’re still waiting on details about the director, cast, plot and release date, we could very easily — and happily — imagine Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer from “Broad City” as undercover police officers in the field. If this dream casting doesn’t become a reality, hopefully it’ll at least manifest as a sketch on the Comedy Central series.
