Rattlestick Playwrights Theater is putting on a festival dedicated to the playwright Lucy Thurber this month.
Thurber’s series of 5 plays, The Hill Town Plays, will be staged simultaneously at the Rattlestick, New Ohio, Axis and the Cherry Lane in the West Village. The plays — Killers & Other Family, Where We’re Born, Stay, Scarcity and Ashville — chronicle a Massachusetts girl’s life from being teen to an adulthood.
Thurber commented on the series:
It’s important that each play stands alone. It was impossible to get all the aspects of the world I was trying to write about into one play. Now you can
get a fuller version of this town and this girl and what it means to come from a culture of poverty.
The links between the plays are not specific but thematic. The girl in each play is the same girl but the names and relationships change with the different plays.
Actress Karen Allen will be making her off-Broadway directing debut with Ashville.
All five plays will share the opening night on September 5th. Ticket info here.
