Take out your legwarmers and pump up the volume on Irene Cara’s anthem: “Flashdance” is getting a second life. Deadline reports that an updated take on the classic 1983 dance pic is in development at CBS All Access, which is about to be rebranded as Paramount+.
Tracy McMillan, whose small screen credits include “United States of Tara,” “Mad Men,” and “Good Girls Revolt,” will write the script. “Professor Marston & the Wonder Women” writer-director Angela Robinson is on board to helm the project. “True Blood” and “The L Word” are among her TV directing credits. She’s under an overall deal with Paramount TV.
Jennifer Beals starred as Alex in the original “Flashdance,” a romantic drama centering on an 18-year-old dancer who dreams of becoming a professional ballerina. Alex works at a steel factory and as a stripper to pay the bills, and becomes involved in a love triangle with her co-worker at the factory and the owner of the club she dances at.
The series reboot will “revolve around a young Black woman with ballet dreams and a strip club reality who struggles to find her place in the world while navigating romance, money, art, friendship, and how to love herself,” the source reveals.
McMillan and Robinson are among the project’s exec producers.
