For the First Time in History, Women Are Running All Three Network Morning Shows

Diana Miller was named EP of "CBS This Morning": CBS News

Yesterday Diana Miller was promoted to executive producer of “CBS This Morning,” succeeding Ryan Kadro, who stepped down three months ago. But Miller’s new position is much more than a run-of-the-mill job change: as CNN reports, her career move means that, for the first time, all three network morning shows are being run by women. “CBS This Morning,” ABC’s “Good Morning America,” and NBC’s “Today” each has a woman exec producer, a role the source describes as the “day-to-day boss.”

Roxanna Sherwood became EP of “Good Morning America” in July 2017. Libby Leist was named EP of “Today” in February 2018.

This milestone for women in television could be an effect of #MeToo, CNN suggests. Since the rise of the movement, sexual misconduct allegations have come out about Charlie Rose and Matt Lauer, formerly of CBS and NBC, respectively. As a result, the power dynamics between men and women at morning shows has been under much more scrutiny. “When Lauer was fired at NBC, Hoda Kotb became Savannah Guthrie’s co-host. When Leist took over the show a month and a half later, it was viewed by staffers as a break with the past.” The source continues, “A similar transition has taken place at CBS. After Rose was fired, John Dickerson and Bianna Golodryga both joined the show as co-hosts.”

A senior broadcast producer at “CBS This Morning” since 2016, Miller had been serving as the show’s unofficial EP since Kadro’s exit. She co-exec produced Gayle King’s headline-making interview with R. Kelly and previously worked as senior producer on “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley.”

Sherwood was exec producer on “ABC News Nightline” from 2015-2017. Her other producing credits include “The Boston Manhunt” episode of “20/20” and “ABC World News Tonight with David Muir.”

Leist previously produced “NBC News Special: The Inauguration of Barack Obama,” “NBC News Decision 2010,” and “Rock Center with Brian Williams.”

One of Apple’s many upcoming projects will delve into the world of daytime television. Starring and exec produced by Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, “The Morning Show” takes a behind-the-scenes look at a  fictional daytime series. Apple has already ordered two seasons of the series, which is showrun by Kerry Ehrin (“Bates Motel”) and counts Mimi Leder (“On the Basis of Sex”) and Lynn Shelton (“Outside In”) among its directors.
