Between the traditional networks, Netflix and Amazon, Yahoo’s pick-up of NBC’s “Community,” and the proliferation of buzzy, slickly produced webseries like “High Maintenance,” it’s hard to know what “television” is anymore.
Entering this tangled and open fray is former “House” executive producer Katie Jacobs, who will develop a medical pilot with John Hawkes sans studio backing. Titled “Dr. Del,” the drama will be based on a New Yorker article about Don Colcord, a pharmacist who serves as the sole medical provider in a 4000 square-mile zone on the Colorado-Utah border.
The series will find Del Canyon (Hawkes) “reluctantly return[ing] to his small hometown to run his family’s apothecary,” according to Deadline. “The series will follow his emergence as the town healer while he grapples between his desire to distance himself from a painful past and his inability to turn his back on a community struggling to find its place in contemporary America.”
I another example of a woman taking the reigns and doing it on her own, Jacobs will develop the project with co-producer Nick Wechsler and she will also direct the pilot when shooting begins April 13 in Los Angeles.
