Four Joan Micklin Silver Films Added to Cohen Media Group’s Cannes Virtual Market Slate

"Between the Lines"

Several films from a directing pioneer will have their day in the sun once again. Screen International has announced that Cohen Media Group will be handling worldwide sales on restored versions of four films from the Joan Micklin Silver Collection at this week’s Cannes virtual market.

The slate includes Micklin Silver’s 1975 feature debut, Carol Kane-starrer “Hester Street,” a portrait of a Jewish immigrant who struggles to assimilate in late 19th century New York, and 1977 drama “Between the Lines,” which was nominated for the Golden Bear at Berlin International Film Festival. The drama sees the staff of an alternative Boston newspaper struggling to adjust when a major publishing company buys the paper.

Rounding out the four are the 1978 prison drama “On the Yard,” about a con artist falling foul of a prison gang, and 1998’s “A Fish in the Bathtub,” the story of a man who insists on keeping his new pet carp in the bathtub, and comes to a crossroads with his exasperated wife. The latter enjoyed a theatrical re-release in New York late last year.

In an interview with Filmmaker Magazine, Micklin Silver spoke about the difficulty she experienced being taken seriously as a female filmmaker in the ’70s. “I tried very hard to get work; I could get work as a writer but not as a director. At that point in time, women directors just didn’t get jobs,” she explained. She recalled one producer telling her, “Feature films are expensive to make and expensive to market and women directors are one more problem we don’t need.”

“Hester Street” was one of 25 films added by the Library of Congress to the National Film Registry in 2011. Micklin Silver’s studio film credits include 1979’s “Head Over Heels,” which was renamed and re-released as “Chilly Scenes of Winter,” and 1988’s “Crossing Delancey.”

Screen also announced that Cohen Media Group is bringing Beth Elise Hawk’s “Breaking Bread” to the Cannes virtual market. The doc centers on Dr. Nof Atamna-Ismaeel, the first Muslim Arab to win Israel’s Master Chef.
