Fox Searchlight Finalizing “A United Kingdom” Buy Out of TIFF

Fox Searchlight is in final negotiations to buy the North American rights to Amma Asante’s “A United Kingdom,” Variety reports.

The film is based on the book “Color Bar” by Susan Williams. Starring Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo, it tells the true story of Seretse Khama, King of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana), and Ruth Williams, the London office worker he married in 1947 in the face of fierce opposition from their families and the British and South African governments.

The film is playing at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, and will open the 60th BFI London Film Festival, which runs from October 5–16 this year.

Fox Searchlight has also picked up the Natalie Portman Jackie Kennedy biopic “Jackie” out of TIFF.
