His first film of the franchise Catching Fire is not even completed, yet Mr. Lawrence seems to made the producers and the studio quite happy because he already has the job to direct the final two films in the franchise — Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2.
This stings a bit because that means that the entire franchise which is about a girl who leads a revolution will have been completely written and directed by men, as Danny Strong has been hired to write both Mockingjay films.
As Christine Spines wrote in Word & Film:
It hasn’t gone unnoticed that Catherine Hardwicke remains the sole female director chosen to shepherd a single installment of three series whose strong female characters are only to be outdone by the badass women who created them. But for the time being, it’s an encouraging sign that Lionsgate has committed to Lawrence for the duration of Suzanne Collins’ series. And we’ll take it on faith that Lawrence will continue to promote heroine chic and the idea that diva behavior is something to be admired, not admonished.
It would have been nice had there been some process that looked for a director and writer for the final two films that could have potentially included a woman.
Here’s to hoping the next franchise gives a woman a chance to write and/or direct.
