Frankie Shaw is returning to the small screen. The Golden Globe-nominated “SMILF” star, creator, writer, director, and exec producer is developing a limited series adaptation of Judy Blume’s “Wifey.” Variety broke the news.
Published in 1979, “Wifey” chronicles “one life-changing summer of Sandy Pressman, a 1970s suburban housewife whose predictable existence compels her to make her rich sexual fantasies a reality.”
Shaw will co-write, exec produce, and helm the first episode of the potential series. “Big Love” alumnae Jeanette Collins and Mimi Friedman are also signed on to write and executive produce. Blume is among the project’s exec producers as well.
A slew of Blume adaptations are in the works. “Little Fires Everywhere” showrunner Liz Tigelaar is developing a limited series based on Blume’s “Summer Sisters” over at Hulu and “The Edge of Seventeen” writer-director Kelly Fremon Craig is bringing Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” to the big screen with Lionsgate.
“SMILF,” a critically acclaimed comedy loosely inspired by Shaw’s own experiences as a single mom, ran for two seasons on Showtime. “Mr. Robot” and “Homecoming” are among Shaw’s other on-screen credits. She’s set to make her feature directorial debut with “Ultraluminous,” a revenge tale about a sex-worker. She’s also penning the script for the adaptation of Katherine Faw’s novel of the same name.
