Bridgette Bird isn’t destined for the WNBA and her acting career leaves much to be desired, but “SMILF” creator and and star Frankie Shaw’s own profile continues to rise. The Golden Globe nominee has signed an overall deal with ABC Signature Studios, Variety confirms.
The two-year agreement sees the “Good Girls Revolt” and “Mr. Robot” alumna developing cable and broadcast projects for the ABC Studios division and allows her to “incubate small projects and films as proofs-of-concept for series.” As the source notes, “SMILF” originated as a short that premiered at Sundance in 2015. Shaw wrote, directed, starred in, and exec produced the nine-minute short.
ABC Signature Studios produces “SMILF” alongside the comedy’s network, Showtime.
“During the journey of developing and producing ‘SMILF’ with Frankie it quickly became clear that we wanted an ongoing partnership to help build out her company, brand and vision,” said Tracy Underwood, senior VP, ABC Signature Studios, which produces “SMILF” alongside Showtime. “She’s such a brilliant artist with a singular point of view while also proving to be an ambitious, taste making producer.”
Shaw added, “ABC Signature has been an incredible partner in bringing ‘SMILF’ to life and I’m so excited to take our relationship to the next level,” Shaw said. “I’m even more grateful for their support in creating a space for new and diverse storytellers.”
Season 1 of “SMILF” earned two Golden Globe nods, one for Shaw’s acting and the other for best comedy series. The Boston-set series follows Bridgette (Shaw), a single mom struggling to make it as an actress and working as a tutor. Rosie O’Donnell co-stars as Bridgette’s mom.
“Ultimately, on some level, it’s a love letter to my son, and so the heart of the story is that relationship, and I think that’s a universal one,” Shaw has said. “Hopefully people will relate to just how complicated parenthood is — and how there’s no such thing as being a perfect parent, and that’s okay.”
Season 2 of “SMILF” is currently filming.
