“Free Solo” tops the 2018 Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards nominations. Directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, the National Geographic title tells the story of Alex Honnold, a climber who attempts to make history as the first person to scale and solo climb Yosemite’s 3000 foot high El Capitan Mountain without ropes or safety gear. The film is up for six awards, Deadline reports.
Four of the 10 films nominated for Best Documentary are directed or co-directed by women, including “Free Solo,” “RBG,” Julie Cohen and Betsy West’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg tribute, “Hal,” Amy Scott’s portrait of film director and editor Hal Ashby, and “Dark Money,” Kimberly Reed’s exploration of corporate influence on elections.
Of six filmmakers in the Best Director race, two are women: Chai Vasarhelyi and Reed.
The Best First-Time Directory category features six nominees, two of whom are women: Cristina Costantini (nominated alongside Darren Foster) for “Science Fair” and Heather Lenz for “Kusama – Infinity.”
Women up for nods in other categories include Rashida Jones (“Quincy”) and Liz Garbus and Jenny Carchman (“The Fourth Estate”).
The Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards will take place November 10. Check out all of the nominees over at Deadline.
