‘Fresh Off the Boat’ Breakout Constance Wu to Star in Feature Debut from Jennifer Cho Suhr

Constance Wu — who has attracted rave reviews for her role as Jessica Huang in the ABC sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat” — is set to hone her dramatic skills in independent feature “You and Me Both.”

The film tells the story of two sisters — one a struggling addict, played by Wu — who take to the road to locate their birth mother. Variety reports that en route from Iowa to Alaska, the movie will explore “themes of grief, forgiveness and belonging,” while “showcasing the breadth and range of the Asian American experience with complicated and deeply human characters.”

Although it sounds like “You and Me Both” incorporates some heavy themes, there should also be plenty of opportunity for the breakout star to put those comedic skills which earned her TCA and Critics’ Choice nominations last year to excellent use. Variety suggests that humor will help the sisters cope with the emotional trials the journey brings.

The drama is the debut feature from writer-director Jennifer Cho Suhr (“American Viral”). Cho Suhr was awarded the Spike Lee Film Production Grant for her science-fiction short “Out There,” the feature version of which was put on NYU’s Purple List for 2013 — a selection the best unproduced screenplays from NYU grads.

“You and Me Both” is being produced by Carolyn Mao ( “American Viral”) and Mollye Asher (“Fort Tilden,” “She’s Lost Control”).

Production is slated to begin this summer.
