NBC has ordered a pilot for an untitled comedy based on the life of “Fresh Off the Boat” producer Kourtney Kang, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. The project marks the first comedy pilot the network has ordered this season. “Fresh off the Boat” showrunner Nahnatchka Khan is serving as an executive producer.
The single-camera project is inspired by Kang’s life and, according to THR, “explores what it’s like to grow up as the only girl in the only mixed race family in the suburbs of Philadelphia, dealing with real-world issues like race and gender while never losing focus of her life goal: to become a Laker Girl like her idol, Paula Abdul.”
Kang is penning the script for the pilot, and Fred Savage (“The Grinder”) is directing. Kang, Khan, and Savage each have overall deals at 20th Century Fox Television, which is where the comedy hails from.
“Fresh Off the Boat” is currently in its third season. The groundbreaking, critically acclaimed comedy centers on an Asian-American family.
“For immigrant families, television is what connects you to American culture, but it’s also what makes you feel like an outsider,” Khan has said. “When we were growing up, the only person we saw on TV that vaguely resembled us was the Iron Sheik — the pro wrestler whose signature move was the ‘Camel Clutch.’ He was always depicted as the bad guy in tournaments, but to us, he was a hero.”
As for the success of “Fresh Off the Boat,” Khan observed that the key “was creating a show about immigrants that worked from the inside out, not the outside in. The Huangs are the center of their world, and we see the world through their eyes, without excuses, explanations, or apologies.”
Extremely few shows have portrayed mixed race families, so Kang’s untitled comedy would be an especially welcome addition to the small screen should it receive a series order from NBC.
