Elsa and Anna are adding another crown to their collection. “Frozen 2” is officially the highest-grossing animated movie of all time globally, Deadline reports. The original “Frozen” previously held the record, earning raves from critics and moviegoers hungry for stories about empowered Disney princesses and queens who don’t need to be saved by a prince. The 2013 smash hit fetched $1.281 billion. “Frozen 2” has taken in an estimated $1.325 billion so far — the pic hit theaters back in November and took in “$42.4 million from 55 material offshore markets and $11.3 million from 3,175 domestic locations” this weekend alone, so it’s clear that Elsa and Anna’s magic is continuing to enchant audiences.
“Frozen 2” was nominated for two trophies at last night’s Golden Globe Awards, Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
“Frozen” directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck returned for the sequel, which sees sisters Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) embarking on a journey to learn more about the past. Elsa needs to know why she was born with magical powers, and to find them, she must venture into the enchanted forests and dark seas beyond Arendelle. Lee penned the script.
