“Frozen 2” is on fire. Elsa and Anna’s second adventure has officially taken in more than $1 billion worldwide, Deadline reports.
As of Saturday, the Disney sequel has grossed $666 million internationally and $366.5 million domestically, adding up to a worldwide total of $1.033 billion. The Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck-directed pic is now the 7th biggest animated release of all time worldwide — and that’s just to date.
“Frozen 2” was released in late November, when it “blew past projections, skating off with the best animated opening of all time internationally ($228.2M) and worldwide ($358.2M). Domestically, the pic snowballed to the top November bow for an animated pic ever,” the source details. “Frozen 2” is continuing to bring in huge numbers at the box office, so time will tell how much more money it will net — and where it ends up in record books.
“Frozen 2” sees Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) embarking on a high-stakes journey to the north in search of answers about the past. Elsa needs answers about why she was born with magical powers, and to find them, she must venture into the enchanted forests and dark seas beyond Arendelle.
Released in 2013, the original “Frozen” scored more than $1.274 billion worldwide.
Another film co-directed by a woman crossed the $1 billion threshold this year: Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s Brie Larson-starrer “Captain Marvel,” which took in over $1.128 billion.
