Women want to see movies about women. And since women buy the majority of movie tickets (and boys and men will buy tickets to watch the adventures of female protagonists), movies about women make money.
That’s just common sense. But, of course, it took several millennia for many people to accept that the world is round.
Over the weekend, Frozen became only the second animated movie in history to surpass $1 billion in box-office receipts, joining Toy Story 3 in the billionaire club. That occasion also marked the first time that a film made by a woman director — Jennifer Lee — has reached that milestone.
Frozen’s record-breaking success makes it the third biggest money-maker released in 2013, trailing only Iron Man 3 (number two) and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (number one).
