FX Picks Up The Bridge from Meredith Stiehm

nullFX has picked up creator Meredith Stiehm’s The Bridge for a thirteen episodes. Production is set to begin in April.

The detective drama stars Diane Kruger and Demian Bichir. Marco Ruiz (Bichir), is a homicide investigator for the state of Chihuahua Mexico, living in Ciudad Juarez. Ruiz is one of the last non-corrupt cops in a police force that is becoming increasingly corrupted and overran by the drug cartel. Ruiz is partnered with his U.S. counterpart, Sonya Cross (Kruger), who is excellent at her job but also unbelievably candid. Cross also suffers from an undiagnosed disorder that in the Autism spectrum (similar to Homeland). The two team up to track a serial killer who is operating on both sides of the border.

The show is an adaptation of Bron—which took place on the Sweden/Denmark border.

FX President John Landgraf is anticipating the new series.

For years networks having been trying develop a drama series set on the U.S.-Mexican border without any success. I’m thrilled to say that Meredith Stiehm and Elwood Reid have become the first to crack that creative code, and they have done so magnificently. There have been great films set in that world – No Country for Old Men and Lone Star come to mind – but never a great TV series. This one is special.

Stiehm was the only woman writer on Homeland and she will be sorely missed. Homeland’s showrunner Alex Gansa has been working on filling Stiehm’s position as well as others in the writing room. Thus far, the only announced new writer is James Yoshimura, a former writer for Homicide. Let’s hope Gansa hires some women writers to help fill Stiehm’s shoes.  Stiehm was also the creator of Cold Case.
