Best known for her gravity-defying role as caped crusader with superpowers in”Wonder Woman,” Gal Gadot is switching gears and taking a fact-based historical thriller to the screen. The actress has joined forces with producing partner and husband Jaron Varsano to form Pilot Wave, and the production company’s first project will be “Irena Sendler,” a Holocaust-set drama for Warner Bros. Deadline broke the news.
Set to be penned by Justine Juel Gillmer (“Wheel of Time”), “Irena Sendler” tells “the harrowing story of a woman’s defiant stand against Nazi Germany’s occupation of Poland and the incredible network she developed to care for and save 2500 Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto,” the source details. “Following her arrest by the Gestapo during the height of the war, the drama becomes a race against time to save not only herself but the identities of the hidden thousands who’ll face certain execution.”
Gadot will star and is among the project’s producers. She’ll reprise her titular role and produce “Wonder Woman” sequel “Wonder Woman 1984,” set to bow June 5, 2020. The original pic grossed over $821 million worldwide. The “Furious 7” star is also set to exec produce an upcoming Showtime series that sees her playing actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr.
“As producers, we want to help bring stories that have inspired us to life,” Gadot and Varsano said. “Pilot Wave will create content that promotes the perspectives and experiences of unique people and produce impactful stories aimed at igniting the imagination.”
“Justice League” and “Keeping Up with the Joneses” are among Gadot’s recent acting credits.
