Gamechanger Films, the studio devoted to women-directed narrative features, has announced its next project: Sarah Adina Smith’s “Buster’s Mal Heart.”
The mystery will feature “Mr. Robot” breakthrough star Rami Malek in his first movie lead role as a fugitive who makes it through winters by breaking into unoccupied vacation homes. At night, the man is haunted by dreams that he’s lost at sea. Here’s the twist: The dream is real; he’s actually leading both lives. The script, also written by Smith, focuses on how he came to have two bodies.
Smith’s directorial debut was “The Midnight Swim,” about three half-sisters who return home after their mother drowns in a nearby lake. (Read our interview with Smith about the film.) “The Midnight Swim” won numerous prizes on the festival circuit, including the Audience Award at AFI Fest. Smith is also the sole female contributor to the upcoming horror anthology “Holidays.”
Gamechanger has two films on its release docket: Karyn Kusama’s critically acclaimed thriller “The Invitation” and So Yong Kim’s lesbian road-trip romance “Lovesong.”
