Gemma Arterton to Star in Catherine Shepherd’s Directorial Debut About Virgin Birth

Catherine Shepherd’s directorial debut “Like A Virgin” has found a leading lady in “Gemma Bovery” star Gemma Arterton.

Deadline reports that the former Bond girl will play a woman named Mary who receives an unexpected visit from the Angel Gabriel. If this sounds familiar, you can probably guess what happens next. Mary is told that she’s destined to follow in the footsteps of her famous namesake: God has chosen her to give birth to the next Messiah — quite the responsibility for someone can barely take care of herself, let alone a newborn savior.

The project will be produced by Kate Ogborn (“The Deep Blue Sea”) and has been developed with the BFI.

Shepherd penned the script for “Like A Virgin,” which was featured in the 2011 Brit List, a compilation of the best unmade scripts akin to the U.S.’s Black List. She’s also an actress and has appeared in “Paddington,” as well as a number of U.K. series such as “Cardinal Burns” and “Gates.”
