“What About Bob?” is joining the company of “Ocean’s 11” and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.” All of these classics are getting female-fronted makeovers. While the latter two are hitting the big-screen — under the titles “Ocean’s Eight” and “Nasty Women” — “What About Bob?” is being adapted for TV as “What About Barb?” The project just scored a pilot order from NBC, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The show, which hails from ABC Studios, is being led by Joe Port and Joe Wiseman (“The Odd Couple,” “The Crazy Ones”), who penned the script and are serving as executive producers.
Released in 1991, “What About Bob?” starred Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss. The dark comedy was a critical and commercial success.
“What About Barb?” is based on the film and “revolves around a psychotherapist who tries to cut ties with her most overbearing patient but is unsuccessful and gains an annoying family member in the process,” THR writes.
It’s nice to see reboots get female-friendly updates, but it’s crucial to remember that women remain underrepresented behind the scenes, too. While a director hasn’t been announced for “Nasty Women” yet, “Ocean’s Eight” is being directed by a man. The 2013 “Evil Dead” reboot with a female protagonist was helmed by a man, as was 2016’s all-female “Ghostbusters.”
If “What About Barb?” gets ordered to series, we’re hopeful that Port, Wiseman, and NBC make an effort to hire women to helm episodes, and to work in the writers’ room and other positions off camera. As important as it is to showcase female characters, it’s also critical to hire women to help tell their stories.
