“Game of Thrones” actress Lena Headey is starring in another story with life-or-death stakes. A press release has confirmed that her new film, “9 Bullets,” has been acquired by Screen Media. A day-and-date release for the crime thriller is being planned for April.
Written, directed, and produced by Gigi Gaston, the pic sees a showgirl played by Headey “risk[ing] everything when she rescues a young boy (Dean Scott Vaquez) after his family is murdered by her ex, the local crime-boss (Sam Worthington). Now on the run, she makes a desperate attempt to get the boy safely to his uncle in South Dakota.”
Barbara Hershey (“Black Swan”) and La La Anthony (“Power”) are also among the cast.
“I’m thrilled that Screen Media has taken this movie under their wing,” Gaston said in a statement. “Their impressive reputation with indies and their multiple affiliates will mean this movie about second chances can find a place in the hearts of viewers and give them the hope that they too can have a second chance.”
“With the strong directorial eye of Gigi Gaston, this team of skilled veteran producers have produced a smart, exciting, and ultimately touching action thriller,” Screen Media added. “The film’s strong message of retribution and resurrection resonated deeply with us, as we’re sure it will with audiences.”
The documentary “The Cream Will Rise” is among Gaston’s past credits.
Headey received five Emmy nominations for playing the ruthless Cersei on “Game of Thrones.” Her more recent credits include “Gunpowder Milkshake” and “Fighting with My Family.” You can see her next in the HBO Watergate miniseries “The White House Plumbers,” expected later this year.
