Gillian Flynn to Co-Pen Steve McQueen’s Female Heist Thriller ‘Widows’

Novelist and screenwriter Gillian Flynn (“Gone Girl”) has been tapped to co-pen Steve McQueen’s next film alongside the director.

The two will collaborate on the big-screen adaptation of the 1983 BBC show Widows, about a quartet of women who pick up their husbands’ trade as robbers after a heist leaves three of the men dead. The TV series was written by Lynda La Plante, best known for creating Prime Suspect. The film version has been described as “a passion project for the director, with its themes of female empowerment.”

Flynn has been developing the HBO series Utopia with David Fincher, an adaptation of the British thriller about comic-book nerds who stumble into a graphic novel that will predict future calamities. Her debut novel “Sharp Objects” is being turned into TV series by Marti Noxon, while her sophomore work “Dark Places” has been translated for the multiplex with star and producer Charlize Theron.
