Gina Rodriguez and Karla Souza are teaming up for a road trip comedy. The pair are set to topline “Like It Used to Be,” a feature being shopped to buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival, which kicks off this Thursday, September 10. A press release announced the project.
Described as a “heartwarming comedy,” “Like It Used to Be” tells the story of four female best friends who embark on a “final road trip to Mexico when one of the women finds out life changing news.”
No word on who will direct the pic, which is being developed and produced by Jolene Rodriguez of Broken English Productions alongside Gina Rodriguez’s production company I Can & I Will and Souza.
“’Like It Used to Be’ is a comedy about friendship, strength, and forgiveness that empowers women and will not only connect with the Latinx community but audiences around the world. This is exactly why Broken English was created — to uplift our community. I couldn’t be happier to work with these talented women,” said Jolene Rodriguez.
Gina Rodriguez broke out with “Jane the Virgin,” and won a Golden Globe for her leading role on The CW’s satirical telenovela. “Annihilation,” “Miss Bala,” and “Someone Great” are among her other credits. You can catch her next in “Kajillionaire,” Miranda July’s con-artist comedy co-starring Evan Rachel Wood. The pic hits theaters September 25. July will be discussing “Kajillionaire” with the Girls Club, a community for women creatives, culture-changers, and storytellers founded by Women and Hollywood’s Melissa Silverstein. The event is slated to take place Thursday, September 10, at 5:30 p.m. EST.
An alumna of “How to Get Away with Murder,” Souza’s other credits include “El Presidente” and “Everybody Loves Somebody.” Her latest pic, Trish Sie’s “The Sleepover,” hit Netflix August 21. The action comedy follows two siblings who discover that their mom is a former thief in witness protection.
