Gina Rodriguez is becoming quite the multi-hyphenate. According to Variety, the actress, producer, author, and new Carmen Sandiego has signed on to executive produce “Femme,” a drama series from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” writers Audrey Wauchope and Rachel Specter. Rodriguez and Emily Gipson will EP the potential series via the former’s I Can and I Will Productions banner in association with CBS. The “Jane the Virgin” star is currently under a multi-year development deal with the studio.
Written and exec produced by Wauchope and Specter, “Femme” “follows four millennial women from different walks of life who become unlikely friends and fierce allies after meeting online in a secret feminist social media group,” Variety details. “They form a sisterhood army in the real world to support each other through both serious and humorous crises and to help other women in need.”
Wauchope and Specter also work as producers on “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” Their previous credits include “Cougar Town” and “One Tree Hill.”
Sabrina the Teenage Witch series “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and the “Roswell” reboot are among the other female-driven shows in the works at The CW.
As previously reported, Rodriguez is producing several series that are in development, including the immigration-themed “Illegal” and “Have Mercy” as well as adaptations of the 1991 Steve Martin rom-com “LA Story” and the Richard Fifield novel “Flood Girls.” Gipson is serving as exec producer on the former two.
On the acting front, Rodriguez has several films opening in the next few months. She’ll voice characters in two animated films: November 17’s Nativity story “The Star” and December 15’s children’s book adaptation “Ferdinand.” Rodriguez will also appear alongside Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, and Oscar Isaac in “Annihilation.” The much-anticipated sci-fi drama hits theaters February 23.
Both “Jane the Virgin” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” air Fridays on The CW. “Jane” is currently in its fourth season, and “Crazy Ex” in its third.
