Gina Rodriguez has stepped out of the world of telenovelas and is stepping into the ring. The “Jane the Virgin” alumna is set to make her feature directorial debut with a sports drama inspired by professional boxer Ryan Garcia, Variety reports.
Currently untitled, the pic, slated to go into production in 2022, will focus on Garcia’s “experiences as a Mexican American lightweight champion.” Garcia will play a fictional version of himself, Alex Guerrero, “whose struggles with mental health rival his toughest bouts in the ring. After a chance encounter with a world champion propels him into the spotlight, he must prove to himself and the world that he has what it takes to come out on top,” the source teases.
Rodriguez is co-writing the screenplay with Bernardo Cubria and will co-star in the film. She’s also producing.
“I grew up in a boxing family and loved watching sports dramas with my dad,” said Rodriguez. “The philosophies of fighting — working hard, staying focused, being honest, fighting fair but to win — have stayed with me.”
Rodriguez described Garcia as “not only an outstanding athlete and champion, but a true advocate of normalizing and furthering conversations on mental health.” She emphasized, “His bravery has inspired me, and I am honored to have his trust to direct this film and guide his first foray into the arts.”
“Awake,” “Kajillionaire,” and “Someone Great” are among Rodriguez’s recent on-screen credits. She previously directed eps of “Jane the Virgin,” which she starred on from 2014-2019 on The CW.
